It's Official: "THE OSBOURNES" To Return For Second Season
May 29, 2002The Osbournes will return for a second season on MTV, the cable network announced today.
"It's proven to be a seminal show for MTV," network president Van Toffler said. "Part of the charm is that it was so unexpected, and I believe the reason it works is the juxtaposition of the freakiest, weirdest human on the planet in the most traditional of situations."
Although the first season consisted of only 10 episodes, the newly-struck deal—which wasn't finalized until this week—calls for 20 episodes that will begin filming next month and air in the fall. Financial terms were not disclosed, but it is believed that the Osbourne family will receive 5 million dollars for the upcoming season, with the potential to make much more if the ratings stay high, if the show is sold internationally and if there's wide interest in ancillary products like T-shirts.
Despite security concerns and rampant rumors that the show would be switching locales in season two from California to the family's castle in Great Britain, the series will be set primarily in the Beverly Hills home spotlighted in the first season, with additional filming to be done in the UK.
As part of the deal, MTV will reportedly air a series of Osbourne specials this summer, including coverage of Ozzfest and "a very special dinner" with the family, However, the repeated reruns of the first set of episodes will apparently slow down during the summer.
